  Bahamas Activities

Cricket on New Providence Island
Visitors who are tired of shopping and sightseeing can take in a cricket game. The season runs from March through November. All games start at noon, and most hotels can tell guests where one is being played.

Diving for Non-Divers, New Providence Island
To participate in a no-experience-necessary underwater adventure, the Atlantis Submarine provides a nice excursion. At Hartley's Undersea Walk, visitors can don helmets and walk on the ocean floor.

Dolphin Encounters, New Providence Island
Children and adults an enjoy dangling their feet in the water while dolphins swim around them or actually swimming with dolphins at Dolphin Encounters at Blue Lagoon Island in Nassau. This activity is not recommended for small children.

Grand Bahama Diving
More than 60 identified and buoyed dive sites exist off the coast of Grand Bahama Island. Port Lucaya is home to UNEXSO (Underwater Explorers Society), just one of the full-service dive centers that can provide instruction, guides, and equipment for experienced and beginning divers. Other underwater activities include the Dolphin Dive and Shark Dive. Ocean Motion in Lucaya is a good place to take the children for rides on a rubber banana pulled by a motorboat.

Grand Bahama Nightlife
Dinner in Freeport and Lucaya can range from a casual Bahamian-style meal to an elegant Swiss dinner. After dinner, it's time to take in a show at the Freeport Player's Guild (September through June) or do a little gambling at the Princess Casino in Freeport or the Lucayan Beach Casino in Lucaya. Both offer numerous gaming opportunities. You must be 18 years of age to play.

Grand Bahama Shopping
For terrific shopping opportunities, head to the International Bazaar in Freeport and the Port Lucaya Marketplace. The duty-free shops and boutiques offer a wide variety of goods at sometimes bargain prices. Goombay Park Arts and Crafts, near the International Bazaar, is a good place for straw goods and other island items.

Nassau Casinos, New Providence Island
When the stars come out, visitors to New Providence Island visit one of the many restaurants and nightclubs or try their luck at the Crystal Palace Casino at the Nassau Marriott Resort on Cable Beach, or at the Paradise Island Casino at Atlantis. Both are Las Vegas-style casinos - casual, big, and noisy. No one under 21 is admitted.

Nassau Shopping, New Providence Island
Nassau has some of the best shopping in the Bahamas. The duty-free shops offer a good selection and especially good prices on perfumes, jewelry, cameras, china, and other fine merchandise. The Straw Market in downtown Nassau is a must for colorful clothing, decorated straw handbags, and other items and souvenirs. Unlike in the duty-free shops, visitors should feel free to negotiate prices at the Straw Market.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving on New Providence Island
Snorkeling and scuba diving are excellent off the shores of New Providence Island. Many hotels have instructors on staff or can put visitors in touch with the businesses that specialize in trips for both novices and experienced divers. Some of the more popular dive spots include Rose Island Reef, Sea Gardens, and Lyford Cay Drop Off. Scuba divers can even do shark dives, in which they can witness nurse sharks being hand-fed by chain-mail-gloved instructors.
