By 1884, this 175-foot historic lighthouse was being built by engineer Francis Hopkinson Smith to prevent the rising number of shipwrecked mariners in the area. The grounds today display historical artifacts and have a gift shop. The climb to the top--all 203 steps--provides a stunning view of Dayton Beach and the surrounding land and water.
