Introduction to Jamaica
Spanning over 4,000 square miles, the Caribbean's third largest island has a little bit of everything: rivers, mountains, plains, forests, caves, and, of course, a beautiful coastline. Jamaica is an island that appeals to travelers who enjoy its pulsating reggae music, rich history, and bountiful attractions that highlight its lush, tropical beauty.
Unlike many of its smaller neighbors, Jamaica offers several distinct destinations that lie a few hours' drive apart on roads that twist and wind beside a jagged coast and, on the eastern end, through the Blue Mountains, with peaks that top 7,500 feet above sea level. The business and political capital of the island is Kingston, a bustling center that's home to the island's top museums as well as its highest crime rate. Those seeking country simplicity might look to Mandeville, tucked high in the hills and boasting the feel of a small English village.
Sybaritic sun worshippers have plenty of choices, from Negril on the west ern end to Montego Bay, Runaway Bay, and Ocho Rios on the north coast. Each of these communities has its own special draw. On the western tip, Negril is preferred by sports lovers, those looking for lots of live music, and anyone in search of the perfect sunset. The small town, which was a hippie hangout in the '70s, is now home to many all-inclusive resorts as well as small inns. About an hour and a half east of Negril lies Montego Bay, often just called MoBay. This is the capital of the tourism business and, for most travelers, the place where they begin their trip, thanks to the Donald Sangster International Airport.
Continuing east from Montego Bay lies Runaway Bay, a small community that's home to several all-inclusive resorts that offer a quieter atmosphere than that found in neighboring communities. Nearby, Ocho Rios, also called Ochi, is the garden center of the island, and a lush haven that's a favorite with honeymooners. Here, waterfalls tumble from the nearby hills i nto the sea and several gardens exhibit Jamaica's lush bounty. On the eastern end, quiet Port Antonio is perfect for those looking for a secluded getaway. This small community was once home to actor Errol Flynn, whose star-studded guest list helped bring the attention of the travel world to Jamaica.
