In Kaunolu visitors can wander through the fishing village, a local temple, and rocky ruins of the old village. This spot once acted as a summer getaway for Kamehameha the Great--the only king (1758-1819) to have united all of the Hawaiian Islands under one rule. Contact Destination Lanai for more information.

Keomuku Village
Off Hwy 44
808-565-7600
Family friendly:
Yes
Located in the northeast, Keomuku Village's most prominent remnant is the partially-restored Malamalama Church. In the 19th century the Village was the site for a proposed sugar plantation that was never built due to the destruction of a local temple by the plantation workers. Not far down from the Village are ancient petroglyphs (indigenous people's rock art). Contact the offices of Destination Lanai for more information.

Garden of the Gods

Besides the high level of natural beauty on the island, a few places stand out as unique. In the northwest, the Garden of the Gods provides a strong counterpoint to the general greenness of the island with its barren, red-rock terrain. It is located at the edge of Palawai Basin--the floor of the volcano that formed Lanai a million years ago. Contact Destination Lanai for more information.
