Introduction to Lanai
Located eight miles off the coast of Maui, Lanai was once the summer home of Kamehameha the Great--the only king (1758-1819) to have united all of the Hawaiian Islands under one rule. Lanai also has a long agricultural history as a major pineapple supplier. The corporation that ran the pineapple-growing business still manages the island, but its focus has moved from agriculture to tourism. Visitors can come for a relaxing day or stay the night at a historic hotel, bed-and-breakfast, or one of two tasteful resorts featuring world-class golf and acclaimed restaurants. All in all, Lanai promises a secluded natural getaway far removed from the throngs of tourists found on the other Hawaiian islands.
