Phoenix Travel Basics
Calling Codes
The area codes for Phoenix are 602 and 480.
Local numbers require a seven-digit phone number. When calling long distance within the U.S., first dial 1, then the area code, and then the seven-digit phone number. When calling outside the U.S., dial 011, the country code, any local area codes, then the phone number. Most hotels allow access to international and long-distance calls. Normally, local calls are available to guest free of charge; at times there is a minimal fee. It is advisable for guests to inquire what the calling rates are before making long distance calls. Rates at hotels are often higher. Guests do have the option of using a calling card or a pre-paid calling card, which can be purchased at local grocery and convience stores.
Dial 0 to get the operator. Dial 411 for directory assistance in the local area; for directory assistance elsewhere, dial the area code in question then 555-1212.
Cellular phones can be used throughout the metropolitan area, although there may be roaming charges and rates vary among services. Cellular phones may not be accessible in the mountain areas or on nature tours outside the city.
Electricity
Electricity is 110V AC, 60Hz in the United States. Plugs are of the flat, two-pin type. Be aware that this voltage is half as much as in most European and Asian countries, so visitors from those countries will need a plug adapter and a power transformer to operate their appliances.
Emergency Contacts
Dial 911 for all emergencies.
Fax/Modem
Fax and online services are widely available throughout the Chicago area. Most hotel rooms are equipped with fax and modem connections and those catering to business travelers often offer guests access to in-house business centers. Additionally, the city boasts a variety of walk-in business centers. Check the local Yellow Pages under "Fax Transmission Service" and "Computers-Training" for further information.
Local Language
The local language of Phoenix is standard American English, although a large percentage of residents are bilingual and also speak Spanish. Though the speech is casual and informal, both English and Spanish are spoken rapidly. People often address one another and new acquaintances by their first name. It would be advised for international visitors to have a phrasebook on hand.

What to Take
During spring, summer, and fall, travelers should pack clothing that is breathable and protects against the sun. During the summer, the temperatures are still warm in the evening, and jackets normally aren't necessary. If visiting in August, an umbrella comes in handy for the afternoon thunderstorms that tend to occur at this time of year.
Heavy clothing is not necessary during the winter months in Phoenix. You should pack slacks, both long- and short-sleeved clothing, and a light jacket. It is optimal to dress in layers during the winter.
Casual attire is appropriate during the day. You may want to pack something dressier for evening dinners, shows, or nightclubs. For outdoor activities, bring comfortable footwear such as sneakers or hiking boots. If you are interested in hiking or outdoor tours, you should bring a backpack that is equipped to hold several bottles of water, sunscreen, a small first-aid kit, and insect repellent.
When to Go
Phoenix is a great winter vacation destiny because of its mild temperatures. The most optimal time to visit is during late fall through early spring. During this time travelers will enjoy temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The average high is 85 degrees and the average low is 59 degrees. Phoenix normally does not average more than seven inches of rain per year. This gives travelers opportunities to participate in outdoor recreational activities unlike anywhere else. Snow is extremely rare in Phoenix; in fact, during the winter, visitors enjoy lots of sunshine.
Summer months bring extreme temperatures to the southwest region of the U.S., and Phoenix is the hottest city in America. If you plan to visit Phoenix during this time, you may want to plan on participating in indoor activities and take advantage of the many shopp ing centers, museums, galleries, and theaters that Phoenix has to offer. Travelers can also get some relief from the summer heat by participating in tours of the scenic surrounding mountains.
